Raised primarily in her Haida culture, she has been learning songs from her mother and performing culturally since she was six years old. At fourteen, she learned the basics of formline and screenprinting — and by sixteen was working full-time as the primary printer for Totem Design House. She has primarily studied Haida art from her uncle Jesse Brillon (Skil Xaaw). Also learning from Kwakwaka’wakw art from Andy Everson, bentwood box making from Richard Sumner, and copper making under Brian Walker. She has received two YVR Art Foundation Emerging Artist Scholarships and shown her work at the Museum of Vancouver. In 2026, at just twenty-seven years old, she carved her first totem pole — and continues to deepen her practice alongside her husband, carver Karver Everson.

The Inspiration

This print idea began as a rough sketch when my family and I were preparing for our potlatch—a hectic time spent creating masks, regalia, and many other things. Years later, the full concept emerged when I had the privilege of joining a digital painting course in Skidegate taught by Haida artist Shoshannah Green, an artist whose work I have long admired. Her contemporary techniques opened up new possibilities for me, and understanding her design process shifted something in how I see and approach my own work.

The story of the print, a woman paddling forward, guided by her ancestors. During this time, I felt this print captured my experience while living on Haida Gwaii, learning my language for eight months and helping begin my clan's first pole in over 200 years. The print captures the life I am creating for myself and continue to dive deeper into learning—a lifelong journey. This journey is guided by my ancestors.

The print depicts a woman paddling forward in a shark canoe, with an eagle on her left and a raven on her right. The night is dark, but the water beneath her glows, illuminating the path ahead—a path her ancestors have travelled before her.

My Haida name is Xaaylingtso: a sunbeam breaking through storm clouds. I am from Laana Ts’aadas. Our moiety is Eagle, and our sub-crests include Shark, Raven, Sculpin, and Halibut. The shark canoe carries our lineage as one of our primary crests. The eagle and raven speak to the two moieties of our people, reflecting how our culture depends on each other to thrive. The glowing water beneath her represents the knowledge of those who came before—still living, still lighting the way.

Look closer, and the image opens into another realm entirely. This woman is not only paddling on water—she is moving through the supernatural. The darkness, the luminescence, and the stillness of the scene place her at the threshold between the physical and spiritual worlds. It is where ancestors are present. It is where transformation happens. She paddles forward in both planes at once—grounded in her identity, guided by those who came before, and crossing into what is yet to come.

PRINT METHOD: GICLÉE
EDITIONS: 99 PRIMARY, 10 ARTIST PROOF, 5 REMARQUE,
RELEASED: June 2nd, 2026

The acid-free 100% cotton rag paper measures 22" x 17” inches
